Barcelona Star, Oshoala Meets President Tinubu, First Lady In Lagos – [Photos]

Super Falcons striker, Asisat Oshoala, arrived at the Lagos residence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday for a courtesy visit.

World Wide Gist reports that the Barcelona Femini forward was received by the Nigerian leader and First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, at their home today, days after departing Abuja for Lagos to celebrate the Christmas and New Year festivities.

Recall that Asisat is currently the CAF Women’s Player of the Year. She received her sixth CAF Award recently, making her the footballer with the highest number of Player of the Year accolades in Africa.

Additionally, she was nominated for the Women’s Ballon d’Or for the second consecutive year, being recognized for her outstanding performance in the 2022 edition.

It could also be recalled that on August 7, 2023, the First Lady received members of the Nigerian female football team, the Super Falcons, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The meeting was after the Super Falcons were knocked out of the FIFA Women’s World Cup by England.

Southampton Coach Russell Martin Hails Super Eagles’ Joe Aribo

Meanwhile, Southampton Coach Russell Martin hailed Nigerian midfielder, Joe Aribo, after he scored his first goal in over a year for the English Championship club.

World Wide Gist  reports that Joe Aribo waited for more than 12 months to score for Southampton on Tuesday, December 26, a sign that he is returning to the form he was known for, especially during his days at Glasgow Rangers.

Aribo’s accurate finish from the edge of the box helped Southampton to defeat Swansea 5-0. Nigerian-born English youth international Sam Edoziee scored twice, while Ryan Fraser added a brace after Che Adams had scored the match opener.

The Super Eagles midfielder scored his first goal in four hundred and fifty days in the seventeenth minute. He scored his last goal for the English team on October 1, 2022, in their 2-1 Premier League loss to Everton before they were demoted to the second-tier league at the end of the 2023-2024 season.

After Southampton’s emphatic win over Swansea, Russell told reporters how at ease he had felt starting Joe Aribo against Swansea, describing the Nigerian as “a beast” in training.

“When Joe Aribo wasn’t playing, he didn’t show frustration with the players, he trained like a beast. He would come to speak to me and get his frustration out,” Russell said.

Recall that Aribo started experiencing a lack of form and lack of game time before Southampton were relegated to the Championship at the end of last season. Unfortunately, he has not been able to regain his form consistently aside from in the game against Swansea on Boxing Day.

So far this season, Aribo has managed to start in six games of the eighteen games he has featured in, but the Nigeria international doesn’t see that as an issue.

“For me it’s all about being a good teammate, being there for my boys, because we all go towards it together. There’s no one man in a team, it’s everyone,” Aribo said.

“It’s been a long time coming! Someone asked me earlier on Tuesday ‘What would I want for Christmas?’ and I said ‘to score’, so I’ve got my wish, thankful to God.”

Fake doctor arrested for organ trafficking, N21m fraud in Nasarawa

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a fake doctor, Igwe Gift Okechukwu, involved in criminal conspiracy, organ trafficking, fraud, cybercrime, stealing, impersonation, cheating, and identity theft.

The arrest was made in Nasarawa State by operatives of the Force Criminal Investigation Department following the suspect’s fraudulent activities in Owerri, Imo State.

The suspect, parading himself as Henry Ovie, a neurologist newly transferred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, tricked a point of sale (POS) operator, Anita Chinwe Mathias, into entering a code on her POS machine.

As a result, the entire sum of twenty-one million naira (N21,000,000) was withdrawn from her account, leading to a police report.

Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed the details of the arrest during a press conference in Abuja.

He outlined the suspect’s modus operandi, where he built trust with the victim, sent a significant amount to her account, and later tricked her into entering a code that facilitated the fraudulent withdrawal.

According to Adejobi, Anita, the complainant, narrated that the suspect used multiple identities and phone numbers, posing as Igwe Richard and Ovie Henry.

“She proceeded to state that on September 11, 2023, the suspect tricked her into entering a code on her POS machine, which she did due to the trust she had for him.

“After the suspect left her place, she noticed that all the money in her POS account was withdrawn, which amounted to the sum of twenty million naira (N21,000,000), and all efforts to reach out to the suspect proved abortive.

“She also went to the Federal Medical Centre, where the suspect claimed to be working, to ask about him and she was told that none of their doctors bears such a name. Immediately, she reported the case to the Force Criminal Investigation Department Abuja, where intelligent officers swung into action to arrest the suspect,” the statement reads in part.

Investigations revealed that the fake doctor had changed his phone number and relocated from Owerri to Lafia, Nasarawa State, where he was subsequently tracked and arrested.

It was further uncovered that the suspect is involved in organ trafficking, with links to a contact in Toronto, Canada.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, reiterated the commitment of the force to combating crimes and ensuring the safety and security of communities.

The IGP assured Nigerians that an extensive investigation is ongoing, and all perpetrators involved in this heinous act will be brought to justice and charged accordingly.
