EPL: Alan Shearer names team to win title this season

Newcastle United legend, Alan Shearer has backed Manchester City to win the Premier League title again this season.

Shearer also tipped the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Aston Villa to finish in the Premier League top four this term.

This comes after Arsenal’s surprise 2-0 home defeat against West Ham United on Thursday.

Recall that Arsenal’s defeat to the Hammers means that Liverpool are currently top of the Premier League standings with two points clear of the North London club.

But despite the advantage at the halfway stage, Shearer still believes that neither Liverpool nor Arsenal will win the 2023-24 Premier League as he backs Pep Guardiola’s side to retain the title, with Aston Villa to finish fourth position.

Speaking on Amazon Prime Video Sport (via Rousing the Kop), Shearer said: “[Manchester] City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Villa. I wanted to put Newcastle in but I can’t!”

Man City, meanwhile, are currently in fourth position in the Premier League standings, having picked up 37 points from 18 games.

The Citizens do have a game in hand over their fellow title contenders.

Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro has said his side can’t use the difficult weather condition in Abidjan as an excuse ahead of their opening game at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The West Africans arrived Abidjan in buoyant mood on Wednesday morning despite losing 2-0 to Guinea in a friendly two days earlier.

The Eagles had a light training session after setting down at their base, the magnificent Pullman Hotel.

Peseiro stated that his team must focus on the task ahead and not allow any form of distraction.

“We cannot give excuses about the weather; we need to put in our focus, adapt well and do our best ahead of the first match, which is very important for us,” he told NFF TV.

The Super Eagles will open their campaign at the 2023 AFCON finals against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday.
