Transfer: Chelsea’s Alex Matos Joins Huddersfield Town

English professional footballer, Alex Matos, has withdrawn from Chelsea to join Huddersfield Town, a Championship side, on loan for the rest of the season.

World Wide Gist reports that Chelsea confirmed the 19-year-old midfielder’s status via a statement on its official website on Thursday.

Matos, who joined Mauricio Pochettino’s side from Norwich City last summer, quickly made a name for himself in Chelsea’s main squad.

The 19-year-old, who possesses the ability to play in both midfield and attack positions, made his debut for Chelsea during their victory over Fulham in October of last year.

Subsequently, he made a second appearance in the Carabao Cup triumph against Blackburn Rovers.

“He will now continue his development at Huddersfield, who sit 21st in the Championship. Good luck, Alex,” Chelsea’s statement reads.

Jennifer Echegini Onyinyechi Signs First Pro-Contract With Juventus

Meanwhile, Super Falcons of Nigeria midfielder, Jennifer Echegini Onyinyechi has signed her first professional contract with the Italian women’s league club, Juventus.

In January 2024, Juventus gave Jennifer Echegini Onyinyechi a one-year and six-month contract which will keep her at the club until June 30, 2026.

Onyinyechi is a product of Arsenal’s women’s youth team. She left the youth system for Mississippi State University in the United States in 2019, where she joined the university’s club, Mississippi State Bulldogs.

While at the club, Onyinyechi, who is currently 22-year-old made about 42 appearances in which she scored 11 goals.

She stayed at the club until 2022 before she left. A year later, she moved to Florida State University to study Management studies.

While at the university, she joined the school’s football club, Florida State Seminoles, where she made 44 appearances and scored 27 goals.

While at Florida State Seminoles, she won the Honda Sport Award for women’s football and the Most Valuable Player of the ACC Tournament, ACC Offensive Player of the Year, and was named to the First Team All-American.

Despite not having a professional football contract then, Jennifer Echegini Onyinyechi, who was born in the Netherlands and raised in London, made her international debut for Nigeria in 2022, World Wide Gist understands.

Onyinyechi was part of the Super Falcons squad that made it to the round of 16 stage of the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

EPL: Arsenal receive Partey injury boost

Arsenal midfielder, Thomas Partey is set to make a return from injury by the end of January.

Partey has made good progress in his rehabilitation work and will hand the Gunners a timely boost.

The Ghanaian has been plagued with different injuries throughout his time in England and picked up a groin problem at the beginning of the season.

He briefly returned to action in October, but picked up another long-term muscular injury.

Partey was then left out of Ghana’s final squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

However, The Mirror reports that the 30-year-old has shown progress in his rehabilitation work and could return to the first team ahead of their Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest on January 30.

EPL: Chelsea’s stance on sacking Pochettino revealed

Chelsea’s stance on sacking their manager, Mauricio Pochettino has been revealed.

Pochettino is under significant pressure as head coach at Stamford Bridge due to the club’s not too impressive display this season.

The Argentine recently watched as Middlesbrough defeated the Blues 1-0 in the Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg tie.

His team currently sit in the 10th position on the Premier League table after 20 games this season.

However, according to The Telegraph, Pochettino’s job is safe for now despite their latest defeat to Middlesbrough.

The report added that his position at the west London club is not in jeopardy while Chelsea have a ‘realistic chance’ of qualifying for Europe.

AFCON 2023: Harsh weather condition won’t be an excuse for Super Eagles – Peseiro

Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro has said his side can’t use the difficult weather condition in Abidjan as an excuse ahead of their opening game at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The West Africans arrived Abidjan in buoyant mood on Wednesday morning despite losing 2-0 to Guinea in a friendly two days earlier.

The Eagles had a light training session after setting down at their base, the magnificent Pullman Hotel.

Peseiro stated that his team must focus on the task ahead and not allow any form of distraction.

“We cannot give excuses about the weather; we need to put in our focus, adapt well and do our best ahead of the first match, which is very important for us,” he told NFF TV.

The Super Eagles will open their campaign at the 2023 AFCON finals against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday.

They will also face hosts, Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau in the group stage.
